Saturday Night Live! - Mambos Salsa Dancing

“Step together, and together… Rotate, Rotate, Rotate!”

During the day, the moment that you step inside The Village Café, you’ll hear the sounds of the eclectic locals in Downtown Bryan filling the café. On late Saturday nights, the rhythmic sounds of Afro-Cuban, Mambo, and Son Cubano transform the café into a salsa night that you are not likely to forget.

Host Christopher Zebo does an excellent job introducing you to the world of salsa, bachata, and merengue — especially when he teaches 60+ people a fun “Intro-to-Salsa” lesson at the beginning of every Salsa Saturday (10:00 pm)

The salsa lesson is one of the best social icebreakers we have ever experienced. Upon arriving, you may bring your date or a friend, but Zebo will scream “ROTATE, ROTATE, ROTATE!” about five minutes into learning the basic steps. Girls then “rotate” counterclockwise to the next guy and everyone gets to know one another really fast. With a great mixture of newcomers and regulars, this adds another level of fun to the night. The regulars are friendly, patient, and quick to help those who need a lending hand.

Once the lessons are over, the dance floor is open from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am to dance the night away. With Texas A&M University only 10 minutes away, there is a melting pot of locals, students, cultures and different dance styles. Zebo also plays a great mixture of classic and modern salsa & bachata with little hints of merengue to keep you on your feet. Not that you would even need to take a break — but if you did, there is ample amounts of seating and a bartender there to serve you your favorite beer, wine, or sangria.

Zebo has been running Mambo’s Salsa Dancing at the Village Café for about nine years has enjoyed being a part of the longest running salsa night in the region. When he is not teaching and hosting Salsa Saturdays, he is a professional photographer. Throughout the years, he has seen great friendships forged and even some of those friends getting married.

Make sure to follow “Mambos Salsa Dancing” on Instagram and Facebook and keep an eye out for Salsa Saturday’s popular “Photo Nights.” Zebo not only hosts the salsa night but also takes professional photos of everyone dancing and shares them the next day on social media for everyone to have—for free! (All photos in this story were taken by him on a photo night.)
